It’s National Poetry Month

In honor of National Poetry Month I share one of my favorite pieces from my book, Under a Sunlit Sky:

“Slow Music”

Those who know me are aware I don’t like to dance.
My hesitation to just let loose
And shake it on a crowded dance floor
I am moved by music-
Emotionally and spiritually
Looking for meaning between the words
That I can relate to
Strangers may dance together to a rocking beat
But they rarely touch, and never speak
And when the slow music starts
The floor clears immediately
People so afraid of showing the softer side that we all have
But refuse to honor and acknowledge
It’s here that I find my place
Loving couples hand in hand may remain on the floor
But the magick is when complete strangers
Summon the courage to walk on to the floor
No words, no lies, no thoughts
Just a need to feel alive and to be held
Expressing that deep need to just feel human
And a connection with something outside of themselves
And as the world slips away, they hold each other
And the slow music plays on to a soft whisper.
They part with a smile,
Or maybe a kiss on the cheek
Never to see each other again
Except in their dreams
Or a fleeting thought on a snowy or rainy day
I invite you to dance with me
And maybe learn to appreciate
The slow music of our hearts
