“The Voice that Matters”

The world consists
of a multitude of voices-
These are either loud or calm,
each one trying to instruct us how to love
according to their world view.
I have been taught
that I need hands to feel,
that I need eyes to see,
that I need ears to listen.
These voices have taught me
how to survive in the physical world;
but not how to live in it.
There are voices telling me
who to trust,
how to think,
what to feel.
There are voices telling me
what is beautiful,
what is popular,
what is expected.
And this is what I have discovered for myself
I have learned
I can feel you without touching your skin
I can see your beauty without my eyes
I can hear you when no words are spoken.
So if I silence my senses
the voices thus fade away
and the only one that remains is my own.
So if I listen very carefully
without expectation or prejudice
I begin to hear that which is truly important,
that which can’t be heard with our ears;
For love can only be heard
when listening from the heart.
