The Cell

Alone I sit in darkness
The world outside cold and heartless
For an eternity I have been imprisoned here
In the jail of my memories
Your every action the iron bars
Your every word the bolts
Had I only known that fateful summer night
You would be judge and jury to my soul
The day you left was the day the clouds came
The day after nothing would ever be the same
Still, every night I pray
Sometimes a lantern passes down the hall
to open someone else’s door
So I sit in the damp darkness of this cell
Waiting for a lantern that may never come for me
